Golfing is supposed to have been introduced in
Portugal by Englishmen involved in the trade of
Port wine in the 19th century. King Manuel II was one of the first
Portuguese golfers who played in the Oporto Golf Club, founded in
1820. In our country, golf expanded from north to south, first to
Lisbon and later to Algarve where there are around
30 courses at present, another five being now under construction.
Algarve is indeed the region par excellence for
golfing in Portugal and a point of reference in the
international scene due to the high concentration of golf courses,
backed by a strong hotel offer, in this part of the country. Weather
conditions, which are practically unique in Europe,
also encourage players from all over the world to come and play in
Portugal, which is though to have some of the best
courses in the world. That is why Algarve was
appointed by the International Golf Travel Awards as “The Year’s
Golf Destination” in 1999 and nominated “The Worls Best Golf
Destination” in 2000/1. In fact, the region registered a total of
940 thousand courses while the whole country totalled almost 2.000
million courses. However, golf is not just a sport. It is also a
surplus value for social development since it adds value to each
hectare, thus contibuting to the sustainability of human occupancy
in the region by transforming less profitable lands into touristic
by-products, and being also responsible for a decrease in seasonal
tourism in Portugal. As it happens all over the
world, the popularity of golf is increasing in our country. Being a
segmente of the tourist industry, the game is developing thanks to
na increasing number of young players, which contradicts the idea
that golfing is for older people. The stimulus to golf was brought
by young players like Ballesteros, who still attracts shoals of
people and became a mythical figure. Curiously, it was in 1974 in
Estoril that 17-old Ballesteros became a professional player. Having
already collected over seventy titles, he never won a championship
in Portugal though. More recently, many well-known
golfers like Sérgio Garcia or Tiger Woods – who rapidly became the
greatest phenomenon in golf of all times – have also contributed to
increase the number of youngers and players. (Golf & Leisure
